TO THE STRANGER

This was an exercise exploring anonymity. It happened as a reaction to the lack of hope caused by the coronavirus pandemic. As a search for connection in a world where the meaning of belonging becomes increasingly fluid.

Addressed to the global crises, the work reflected my own paralysis in the face of the momentum. I was supposed to be away, but instead I found myself in Amsterdam, lost in translation in my own home.

Despite the prevailing scepticism, the death toll in the Netherlands, as in most of Europe, surpassed apocalyptic levels on a daily basis. Meanwhile, in my homeland, the virus hit hard, especially hitting the poor.  There was nowhere to go, and I was afraid of the unknown.

The work emerged as an epic response, as though the time had come to leap into the unknown. When the music started in the havens, I grabbed a mantle and danced. That was the only thing I could do, in the face of my own isolation and powerlessness.
